Steel doors and interior elements

Steel elements in your interior. The last years there has been some developments around the usage of steel elements in your interior. Here in Amsterdam we have designed nice steel doors and partitions. Whereas when the trend to use steel in the interior started with the total design of the house and interior focused on the steel elements now there is a different direction. The trend now is to make subtle use of steel and have it integrated in a rather soft way.

Interior trend in steel doors and elements

Steel trends. So what is happening is that steel elements are still used and they are still beautiful. Though we much more often receive the design question how to integrate steel with classic or vintage interiors. One way to integrate steel doors in a classic interior is to powdercoat the steel in a light or white color. This way it blends into the interior in a very smooth way. In a more vintage interior white steel makes the interior look like an old French restaurant with old steel and glass elements. One other way is to not overuse steel. For example in a nice and classical interior you can use the steel in one single place, thus not focussing all to much on that steel as an interior feature but rather an element that is just there.

What we have seen before is that the whole interior was made industrial. Brick exposed walls and steel kitchens combined with steel partitions. The trend is moving away from this to have steel as a subtle addition to more elegant interiors.

Where to use steel elements

Steel partitions and doors are most common. The Amsterdam apartments are often small. Then it is necessary to split the main room into two parts, so if you have guests you can close off the room. The advantage with steel and glass is that the room stays light and you lose very little space. Let’s conclude steel is often use to separate already existing rooms for different usage. Think of a study and a bedroom. Or living room split in a dining and living section. Steel partitions create space in a fashionable way.

What makes steel look nice?

Steel designs are not simple. If you overdo the design steel looks heavy and chunky. So the secret in the design of steel elements in the interior is to keep it simple. Keep simple lines, not too many divisions and very thin elements. Black is still nice in the steelwork but white is more popular right now. The opening of the doors is also an element of thought. Steel doors can open on normal hinges , as sliding doors or on taatse systems. This is a system where the doors hinge on ceiling and floor and therefore swing or turn form the middle. This way the door opens more efficient and saves space in the room.

Special usage of steel

Last year in Amsterdam center we had a challenging design question that actually only could be solved with steel solutions. The staircase of the entry ended right in the middle of the living room. Very awkward and strange. We came up with a design where we have built a whole construction around the staircase, in this case the stairs coming up in the living room and the one that went up to the second floor. One side was used as a backwall to a centrally located kitchen. All other sides were steel and glass and visible. The result is fantastic. A focus point but not overdone. We have tackled a very difficult situation when you enter the living room. Pay special attention to the custom made and curved steel bannisters.
